History of the Legal Marijuana Now Party -

In the 1960s and 1970s the Youth International Party (or Yippies) often ran candidates for public office to promote the ideals of the hippie subculture. The Youth International Party flag is a five-pointed star superimposed with a cannabis leaf.
​
In 1986 the Grassroots Party was founded in Minnesota. The Grassroots Party was active in Iowa, Minnesota, and Vermont, and ran numerous candidates for public office.
​
The Legal Marijuana Now Party is a branch of the Minnesota Grassroots Party that was established in 1998.
​
Legal Marijuana Now became an official state political party in Minnesota in 2014. The Legal Marijuana Now Party has active chapters in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. Other marijuana political parties, the Legalize Marijuana Party and the U.S. Marijuana Party, are active in New Jersey, and Vermont.

Platform, Ideology, and Guiding Principles -

The official, permanent platform of the Legal Marijuana Now Party is the U.S. Bill of Rights.
​
Prohibition endangers public safety by fostering corruption, curtailing civil liberties, and perpetuating racism. The Legal Marijuana Now Party believes legalization would bring more jobs and money into the economy.
​
The hemp plant provides multiple durable goods such as rope, fabric, industrial oil, and biofuel. Cannabis itself is food and medicine.

Name, Mascot, and Party Colors -

"What do we want?" "Legal marijuana." "When do we want it?" "Now!"
​
Named so the message would be clear and easily understood, Legal Marijuana Now Party's founding members were inspired by Minnesota's Farmer-Labor Party.
​
The official party mascots are Marvelous Cannabis Leaf, and Pro-cannabis Panda.
​
Legal Marijuana Now Party colors are the Rastafari colors, green, gold, and red, and sometimes black. The colors are from the flag of Ethiopia and are also the colors of the Youth International Party flag.
​
Also a rainbow flag is proudly displayed by Legal Marijuana Now Party, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet, representing inclusiveness. And alternate Legal Marijuana Now Party colors are red, white, and blue, representing the United States flag.
​
Go Duba Gong (The Dooby Song) by The Syndicated Mickey Moore Variety Show has become the Legal Marijuana Now Party anthem. The Legal Marijuana Now Party has been authorized to use “The Dooby Song” for party activities and for broadcast in media as a sound logo. Multiple pro-legalization candidates have used “The Dooby Song” in their campaigns for elected office.

Honorary Members -

Mary Jane "Brownie Mary" Rathbun (1922-1999) was raised and educated in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
​
Brownie Mary was arrested three times for baking "magical brownies" using her Social Security to buy ingredients and cannabis that was donated, giving them away free to AIDS and cancer patients.
​
In California in 1992 before medical marijuana was legalized there, Mary was able to successfully defend herself in court, arguing that medical necessity outweighed the reprehensibleness of her actions.
​
In Minnesota today Mary Jane Rathbun would be denied a fair trial. Rathbun's lawyer would not be allowed to discuss medical need and no doctor would be allowed to testify. The Legal Marijuana Now Party is working to change the law in Minnesota.
Jack Herer (1939-2010), author of The Emperor Wears No Clothes: Hemp & The Marijuana Conspiracy, was the Grassroots presidential candidate in 1988 and 1992.
